About RE-KAYU:

RE: KAYU is a Malaysian-based social enterprise that aims to uphold sustainability throughout the ASEAN region. They believe in creating an environmental and social impact by enabling underprivileged youths from Malaysia’s low-income families to create
beautiful upcycled wooden furniture from recycled wood. RE: KAYU was created after the COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the living situations for local communities, particularly the lower-income groups. These groups lived in local public housing and were unable to afford basic furniture. Poor living conditions are among the factors that affect individuals’ physical and mental health. RE: KAYU aims to help these affected groups by providing the youths with a sense of purpose through mentorship and employment.

Introduction:

The Iskandar Puteri Circular Community 5.0 (IPCC 5.0) is a community-led circular economy initiative by social enterprise RE-KAYU, supported by the Iskandar Puteri LowCarbon Community Grant Programme. With a total grant of RM22,000, this project seeks to address the challenge of wood waste by repurposing discarded timber into functional, marketable products. Aligned with the Low Carbon Society Blueprint for Iskandar Puteri 2025, IPCC 5.0 aims to cultivate a low-carbon, inclusive, and resilient local community by combining sustainability with economic empowerment. The initiative mobilises youth and marginalized groups in Iskandar Puteri to develop hands-on carpentry and upcycling skills through structured training and community workshops.

Project Objectives:
  1. Promote circular economy practices through waste wood recycling and upcycling.
  2. Empower B40 youth, at-risk youth, ex-convict, and unemployed individuals with
    woodworking and entrepreneurial skills.
  3. Divert wood waste from landfills and reduce environmental impact.
  4. Generate supplementary income for participants through the sale of upcycled
    products.
  5. Raise public awareness about sustainable living through hands-on DIY workshops
    and community engagement.
Expected Outcomes:
  • Minimum of 100 kg of wood waste recycled.
  • 60 beneficiaries trained in woodworking and upcycling.
  • Establishment of a community micro-production hub.
  • Development and sale of up to 30 reclaimed wooden furniture/handmade wooden
    products
  • Hosting of three public engagement events (workshops and exhibitions).
  • Collection of impact testimonials to be used for final reporting and promotional
    purposes.
